Habitat-NYC's Advocacy Program

BUILD LOUDER!

Habitat-NYC's mission is to transform lives and our city by building quality homes for families in need and by uniting all New Yorkers around the cause of affordable housing. And while we’ve built more than 260 homes for deserving families since our founding in 1984, it would take Habitat for Humanity more than 5,500 years to meet the current housing deficit.

That is why we challenge governments, faith communities, corporations, and volunteers to raise their voices and pens as well as their hammers to solve the housing crisis here in New York City and across the globe! Join us in building a movement to eradicate poverty housing from our communities and neighborhoods.

Advocacy Ambassador

Habitat-NYC is calling for faith-rooted advocates, family partners, volunteers, and supporters to join our growing list of Advocacy Ambassadors to take the next step in Building Louder. Our mission calls us to unite New Yorkers around the cause of affordable housing and our advocacy work allows us to mobilize and galvanize our supporters to change systems and structures in the pursuit of a more just New York City.

The Advocacy Ambassador program is an exciting volunteer opportunity for Habitat-NYC supporters to partner with us outside the construction and Brush with Kindness sites. Advocacy Ambassadors will be notified of special opportunities to advocate for affordable housing policies and aid in our efforts to affect change in our city. These opportunities include:

› Participation in press conferences and housing rallies
› Capital lobby days and legislative office visits
› Covering legislative hearings and committee meetings
› Receiving Monthly Housing Digest of news stories about housing issues
› Attending local political events and represent Habitat on issues relating to housing continuum
› Contributing to newsletters and social media communications
› Recruiting additional advocates
› Providing housing information from your district to Advocacy Department

This group will also be invited to take part in policy update conference calls, plan creative events to promote housing justice and aid in identifying emerging and persistent housing issues. Our ultimate goal is to have an Advocacy Ambassador from every legislative district in the city.

Commitment:

› Participate in periodic conference calls and planning meetings
Sign up and promote online Housing Justice Action Center alerts
Prioritize attendance to annual Albany lobby day and local Habitat events at City Hall and in your districts

Outcomes:

Make Affordable Housing and Homeownership a top Legislative Priority for New Yorkers and our Elected Officials
› Increase the number of advocates for the entire housing continuum
› Create a closer connection between elected officials and Habitat-NYC through increased communication and personal contact, thus generating stronger relationships and understanding of the need for housing
