Habitat-NYC’s building sites serve as a common ground for all New Yorkers to come together to work to address New York City’s housing crisis. Habitat-NYC has volunteer opportunities for:

As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to work in a variety of phases of construction – framing walls, installing insulation, hanging drywall, laying down hardwood floor and tiling, painting the interiors, putting up trim and doing finish work. We are looking for individuals with or without construction skills; however, all volunteers must be 16 or older.

Volunteer Crew Leader

Position: Volunteer Crew Leader
Reports to: On-site House Leader
Locations: Laurelton, Queens and Staten Island

About Habitat for Humanity – New York City:

Habitat for Humanity – New York City, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, transforms lives and our city by uniting all New Yorkers around the cause of decent, affordable housing for everyone.  To date, we have built more than 260 homes in New York City, engaging thousands of volunteers each year.  Habitat-NYC builds in all five boroughs. Habitat for Humanity – New York City is at a particularly exciting moment in our history, as we leverage our volunteer model to build more homes for families in need, and strengthen more hard-hit communities than ever before.

Site locations will be in Laurelton, Queens or Staten Island.

Responsibilities

Maintain the quality of the Habitat-NYC volunteer experience by providing orientation, leading volunteers when necessary and providing training on the site to ensure that all work is completed to HFH standards.
• Monitor sites for safety compliance and ensure safety protocols and procedures are followed. 
• Assign tasks and supervise small groups of volunteers.
• Demonstrates construction techniques and appropriate tool handling to daily volunteers.
• Ensure tools and materials are used and stored in safe manner.
• Arrive on site at least 30 minutes prior to build start time for work day preparation, 8:00am on weekdays and 8:30am on weekends.

Qualifications

Be able to communicate effectively with volunteers from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to teach tool handling and task performance to day volunteers.
• Contribute positively to work environment centered on partnership of families, donors and volunteers. 
• Familiarity with relevant tools and safety procedures.
• Capability and self-motivated to perform required construction tasks. 
• Residential construction experience (preferred but not required).

Time Commitment: 8 hours a week (minimum) or more. Project lasts four months from April - July. Volunteer must commit several days a month. Habitat builds Tuesdays-Saturdays 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., except April will be Wednesdays - Sundays 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

• Shadow Site Leaders and attend once as a volunteer

As skilled volunteer prospects, you will not be asked to lead volunteers unless the site supervisor sees that your skill level equips you to do so. That would be a decision for the site supervisor to make and not the skilled volunteer program coordinator. After a week of training you will be asked to work with us again on another construction site as a skilled volunteer. Then you will be asked to lead 4 or more general volunteers.
