Building Common Ground for Housing Justice

At Habitat for Humanity New York City we are called by our mission not only to build, but to unite all New Yorkers around the cause of housing justice for everyone.

In 2016, we are committed to promoting affordable housing for all. We invite New Yorkers to come together and raise our voices as well as our hammers to strengthen our great city, state and nation.

2016 Housing Covenant Issues:

New York City Priorities

  • Increase support for multi- and single-family affordable homeownership opportunities by:
    1. Increasing Down-Payment Assistance grant amounts for low income homebuyers,
    2. Incorporating homeownership development on City owned land for mid-to high-rise buildings, and
    3. Issuing bonds and a soft second subsidy for multi-family affordable cooperative projects

  • Support the creation of permanently affordable homeownership

New York State Priorities

  • Support Habitat homebuilding efforts statewide by allocating increased resources for SONYMA’s low-interest Habitat mortgage

  • Increase Affordable Housing Corporation funding to $50M and increase cap on subsidy for homeownership projects in high cost communities to $110k/unit

Federal Priorities

  • Protect federal resources that support the work of Habitat for Humanity nationwide – including AmeriCorps/VISTA funding, HOME and CDBG programs

International Priorities

  • Support Habitat for Humanity International’s Solid Ground campaign to change land policy and systems to ensure that more people around the globe can have a decent home.

Habitat for Humanity New York City transforms lives by building quality homes with families in need and by uniting all New Yorkers around the cause of affordable housing.
