Director of Finance

Founded in 1984 as an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, Habitat NYC constructs new or renovates existing homes in the five boroughs of New York City for affordable homeownership by families in need. Our mission is to transform lives by building quality homes with families in need and by uniting all New Yorkers around the cause of affordable housing.

Job Overview:

Managing Accounting/Finance team to provide stewardship to the Organization and all its departments so they may carry out their functions more efficiently to support the Organization’s mission statement.


Accounting and Administration

  • Supervise, manage, and train Accounting/Finance (Department) staff as well as any volunteers and interns
  • Review and supervise all month end and year end processes and accounts
  • Review bi-monthly financial statements and monthly budgets
  • Manage annual audit
  • Produce annual organizational budget
  • Develop and maintain the Organization’s Enterprise Risk Assessment
  • Maintain the company’s accounting system and make recommendations for enhancements and upgrades
  • Review payroll transactions for accuracy and compliance.
  • Develop and oversee reporting process with Real Estate to accurately track costs and forecast estimated costs to complete
  • Assist CFO in ad hoc reports and analysis
  • Assist all departments on various financial and administrative inquiries
  • Ensure Department processes routine transactions, assists other departments with various inquiries, and provide customer service to Family Partners in a timely fashion
  • Monitor and create department’s internal controls
  • Update and Department’s related policies and procedures
  • Monitor compliance with the City, State, and Federal governments as well as compliance with grantors


  • Provide support for ReStore including the set-up of internal controls and POS
  • Review filing ReStore quarterly sales tax with NYS


  • Oversee Organization’s IT projects and controls and liaise with IT consultants
  • Liaise with consultants and management on IT strategies

Loan Fund/Mortgage Servicing

  • Manage Loan Fund’s portfolio and finances
  • Ensure compliance with all CDFI rules and regulations as well as to Loan Fund’s policies and procedures
  • Ensure compliance with mortgage servicing laws as well as Anti-Money laundering and American bankers Association regulations
  • Monitor and update all Loan Fund policies and procedures
  • Create and monitor Loan Fund budgets
  • Monitor Loan Fund cash flow
  • Ensure administrative governmental filings are updated including AMIS, SAM.GOV, and GRANTS.GOV


  • CPA preferred
  • BA/BS In Accounting
  • 7+ years in work related experience


  • Must be a clear and effective communicator to those inside and outside of the Organization, including Family Partners
  • Must be effective at prioritizing multiple tasks and completing them in a timely fashion
  • Must provide timely service to all internally and externally
  • Must be effective at empowering team and delegating effectively
  • Must be highly organized
  • Proficient accounting software, MS Office, and general quick learner in computer programs
  • General knowledge of computers and IT
