In early 2017, Habitat for Humanity New York City and Westchester County and co-developer Latent Productions broke ground on the three-building “Seed” development which will allow 25 hard-working New York individuals and families to become first-time homeowners.
Seed will blossom at the intersection of Park Place, Thomas S. Boyland Street, and East New York Avenue in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. Vacant for years, the 19,300 square-foot site was formerly owned by the New York City Department of Housing Preservation Development (HPD), from which Habitat NYC and Westchester acquired the property.
Seed will consist of three new four-story, walk-up buildings including a total of 25 units. The complex will include seven one-bedroom, 15 two-bedroom, and three three-bedroom apartments. Individuals up to families of six are eligible for the apartments of varying sizes.
All units will be affordable for working families making 50 to 80 percent of New York City’s Average Median Income (AMI). The project will incorporate a sustainable design approach and be certified by Enterprise Green Communities and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ENERGY STAR, helping to keep utility costs low and keep New York City clean. Future homeowners will also enjoy a common rear yard, connecting all three buildings, as well as shared laundry, storage facilities, and bicycle parking.
Seed is a short distance from the 2, 3, 4, 5, A and C trains, and from numerous bus lines through central Brooklyn.
