“My experience with HYP made New York City feel like home for the first time. This is more than a volunteer initiative, HYP is a community of leaders utilizing their skills and leveraging their networks to bring Habitat NYC and Westchester’s vision to life. I’ve been able to take what I’ve learned and apply it to my work abroad.”

—Mohammad Ali, 2018 HYP Board Member

As Fundraising Chair, I am thankful to be given the chance to engage with our community to raise finances, so we can continue to operate and enact Habitat’s broader vision of providing everyone with a decent place to live. Habitat has been a constant in my life since my time as an undergraduate in Pittsburgh. I have previously attended multiple spring break home builds and have been actively involved in construction and demolition on over 20 homes in the Pittsburgh area prior to moving to NYC.

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, where affordable housing is a major crisis, so housing justice has always been important to me. The Bay presents a very similar housing situation to that of NYC, so I am very familiar with the bureaucratic red tape and resources required to fund affordable housing projects in such expensive cities. Upon moving to NYC, I wanted to continue my advocacy for housing justice and HYP presented that exact opportunity. I believe housing is a human right, and therefore stand firmly behind Habitat’s mission of creating an equitable New York in which all people have access to safe, secure, healthy, and affordable homes.
